Ken Downing, Creative Officer for Triple Five Group, headlines as keynote speaker.


DALLAS—February 25, 2020 -- Fashion Group International of Dallas (FGI Dallas) will award more than $60,000 in fashion and merchandising scholarships to outstanding college and university students from across North Texas and the region on April 24th at its annual FGI Dallas Scholarship Competition Awards. The event takes place from 1-4 p.m. in The Grand Pavilion of The Trade Mart of Dallas Market Center.


Headlining the event as Keynote Speaker, Ken Downing has enjoyed an illustrious career as senior vice president and fashion director for 28 years with Neiman Marcus.  Last year, he joined American Dream – Triple Five, as Creative Officer to open Hudson Yards in New York City's Manhattan.

Downing will provide students with sage advice for their future in the fashion industry


"This year our theme focuses on 'The Future of Fashion' paying homage to the next generation of fashion designers which FGI Dallas supports with its annual scholarship competition. We are thrilled to continue this tradition, and are celebrating our 52nd year giving scholarships to the area's most outstanding fashion and merchandising students," commented Rhonda Sargent Chambers, FGI of Dallas, Co-Regional Director and coordinator of this year's event since 2006.


Students from area fashion schools, colleges and universities in the Southwest Region, submit design and merchandising entries in four apparel categories and two merchandising categories to receive scholarship awards ranging from tuition and expenses to the esteemed ParisAmericanAcademy in Paris to awards of excellence ranging from $500 to $10,000. Winners are announced in a "Project Runway" style fashion show on April 24th before an audience of fashion experts, VIPs, local celebrities, as well as students and faculty from participating schools.


Award categories and sponsors include: Little Black Dress sponsored by DallasMarketCenter; Women's Sportswear, Sharon Young, Inc.; Bridal, Eveningwear and Cocktail, Tootsies; Menswear, Fashion Group Foundation of Dallas; Merchandising-Store Planning, DAVACO; Merchandising-Fashion Portfolio, DAVACO. In addition to the apparel and merchandising categories, overall excellence awards are given, including:

  • Fashion Excellence Award, $5,000, FGI of Dallas
  • Couture Award, Tuition, including expenses, to ParisAmericanAcademy
  • Director's Choice Award, $10,000 and $2500, FGI of Dallas


Complementing the event's theme, a panel presentation on "The Future of Fashion" will be moderated

by FGI of Dallas Board of Directors member and owner of Think Three Media, Leah Frazier. Members of the panel will include industry leaders in fashion, retail, e-commerce and marketing:   Lela Orr, Founder & Creative Director of FERRAH: Venny Etienne, designer of Levenity; and owner of retail store Vintage Martini, Ken Weber.
